Ely Medieval Stained Glass Panel- Blue, Plum & Green Inserts

"ELY" MEDIEVAL STAINED GLASS SMALL WINDOW PANEL. The design of the Ely grisaille is based on an 11th century window in Ely Cathedral, England, and is 41cms square i.

Small Windows is a range of designs suitable for any small window. The designs can be made to order in most sizes and choice of colours and can be fitted by any competent handy-man either by hanging as an insert in an existing window or replacing it. The panels are hand-made and where painted are hand painted in the style of the 12th and 13th centuries. I use only quality glass and lead.

The paints used are vitreous paints or stains, from which stained glass takes its name. They are the same type as used in the Middle Ages and are applied with the same techniques as then. Designs currently available include medieval ones based on "grisaille" windows at cathedrals such as Ely, York, Chartres and Altenberg. Grisaille is a type of ornamental stained glass work originating in the 12th century in which windows are decorated with geometric and other patterns either by means of the lead holding the glass or the black or dark brown kiln-fired paint or "grisaille"used to decorate them. A range of window panels based on traditional Celtic designs is also available.

Because of the notorious difficulty of photographing stained glass I usually show two pictures, one taken against a window and the other against a light box.
