Antique Medieval 13th Century Stained Glass Panel Fragments from Koln Cathedral. One of the panels is marked Koln Cathedral 1945. The Koln (Cologne) Cathedral survived after sustaining 14 bomb strikes during WWII. The Cathedral stands on the site of a 4th century Roman temple, which was followed by a square church, that was followed by a cathedral which was completed in 818 which burned down in 1248 and construction of the present Gothic cathedral began. There were numerous interruptions in its construction which was completed in 1880. Although many of the panels in the cathedral date back to the 13th century, I do not know the specific age of these fragments. The lead surrounding each piece is in relatively sound structural condition. Most of the individual glass pieces have some movement, but are secure within the lead surrounding it. These fragments likely fell from the windows during bombing and consequently there are a number of cracks and chips which you will see in the pictures. Given the historical significance, I have not cleaned these, except for a light dusting. You will see in the second picture that I have assigned a number to each of these fragments, the list below gives the size of the corresponding fragment. 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" (8.9cm x 8.9cm). 3-3/4" x 5-5/8" (9.3cm x 14cm). 4-5/8" x 4-1/8" (11.7cm x 10.2cm). 4-5/8" x 4-3/4" (11.7cm x 12cm).
